Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you see patients?

Patients must be physically located in Connecticut or New York state. This is a telemedicine-only practice, and all appointments are conducted virtually using state-of-the art videoconference technology that allows face-to-face contact over any distance and the convenience to access mental health care from home, office, or any place private that works for you. In-person appointments are not offered at this time.

What age groups do you see?

This practice currently provides mental health care to adults ages 18-64.

Do you accept insurance?

No, Ikigai Psychiatry does not participate with any health insurance plans, Medicare, or Medicaid at this time. However, as an “out-of-network” provider, we do accept out-of-network benefits that may be included as part of your health insurance plan. This allows for treatment to be more personalized based on your unique needs.

We can provide a “superbill” invoice (itemized receipt) for appointments that you can submit to your insurance company for partial to full reimbursement.

Psychiatric treatment can also be considered eligible for Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) reimbursement.

In order to clarify your coverage for out-of-network care, below are the recommended 4 Questions to ask your insurance carrier. You can ask them by phone, through your insurance portal, or through a benefits-check tool if your plan has one.

  1. Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health telepsychiatry care?

  2. What is my out-of-network deductible, and have I met it?

  3. After my deductible is met, what is my out-of-network coinsurance? (Example: “Do you reimburse 60%?” “Do I pay 40%?” They’ll often state it this way.)

  4. What is the allowed amount (or how many sessions are covered) for psychiatric evaluation and follow up visits per calendar year?

Please contact us for information or questions regarding fees.

Do you prescribe controlled medications?

Due to federal regulations surrounding the prescribing of controlled substances over telemedicine (Ryan Haight Act), I do not prescribe any controlled medications at this time.

Examples of controlled medications include:

  • Stimulants for ADHD such as Ritalin, Adderall, Vyvanse. Of note, I do discuss and provide non-stimulant options which may be helpful for ADHD.

  • Benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin

  • Sleep medications such as Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata

Do you complete requests for paperwork?

I do not offer FMLA or disability evaluations, worker's compensation evaluations, forensic evaluations, or provide legal services or testimony. I do not fill out paperwork for school absences, work accommodations, or emotional support animals.

What is the cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel an appointment, please do so at least 24 business hours in advance. Business days are considered weekdays, and exclude holidays. Cancellations made with less than 24 business hours notice, or missed appointments, are charged the full appointment fee. For example: an appointment scheduled for 12pm on Monday must be cancelled by 12pm on Friday to avoid incurring a fee.
